A crow had come by a piece of cheese and sat perched high above the ground with it in his beak. A fox saw him and prowled around beneath him, plotting a trick. “What a sight!” she said. “Crow, how finely proportioned you are! And your plumage is fit for a king of the birds. If only you had a voice as well, you would surely reign over them all.” This she said to deceive him. Taken in, the crow let the cheese fall and gave a mighty caw, making his display of voice at the cost of his prize. The fox snatched it up and said, “You had a voice, Crow, but you lacked sense.” Heed your enemies, and you will come to harm.
