During the reign of Emperor Xuan of Han, a hen in the carriage enclosure at Weiyang Palace turned into a rooster. Its plumage changed, but it neither crowed nor mounted hens, and it had no spurs. Under Emperor Yuan, a hen brooding over her chicks in the household of a clerk in the Chancellor’s office gradually became a rooster, developing a comb and spurs, crowing, and mounting hens. During the Yongguang era, someone presented a rooster that had grown horns. The Treatise on the Five Elements regarded these as portents of the rise of the Wang clan. Jing Fang’s Commentary on the Changes says: “When worthy men live in an age of darkened light, understanding the times yet grieving at the deluded multitude in office, the portent is a chicken growing horns.” It also says: “When a woman monopolizes power, the realm is unsettled; when a hen crows like a rooster, the ruler is brought low.”
