Hermes, wishing to test whether Tiresias’s gift of prophecy was genuine, stole his oxen from the fields, then came to him in town disguised as a man and stayed as his guest. When Tiresias was told that his pair of oxen was missing, he took Hermes with him to the outskirts of town to look for an omen concerning the theft, asking him to report whatever bird he saw. First Hermes spotted an eagle flying from left to right and told him of it. Tiresias said that this bird had no bearing on their affair. Next Hermes saw a crow perched in a tree, now looking up, now bending its head toward the ground, and described it to him. Tiresias promptly replied, “Why, this crow is swearing by heaven and earth that, if you wish it, I shall get my oxen back.” This tale might well be used when addressing a thief.
