Huang Shen, a villager of Mi in Jurong County, was plowing his fields when a woman passed along the ridge between them, coming from the east, making her way down, and then returning. At first Shen took her for an ordinary person. But when she did this day after day, he began to find it very strange. He asked her, “Where do you keep coming from?” The woman paused briefly, but merely smiled without answering and went on her way. Shen grew still more suspicious. He readied a long sickle and lay in wait for her return. Not daring to strike the woman herself, he struck only the maid who followed her. The woman turned into a wildcat and fled. When he looked at the maid, he found that she was nothing but the wildcat’s tail. Shen gave chase but could not catch it. Later, someone saw the wildcat emerge from a hole and dug it out. It no longer had a tail.
