During the Jin dynasty, a man in Wuxing had two sons. As they worked in the fields, they would sometimes see their father come to curse them and chase them about, beating them. The boys told their mother, who questioned their father. Greatly alarmed, he realized that it must be a ghost and told the boys to strike it with their axes. After that, the ghost fell quiet and no longer appeared. Worried that his sons might have fallen prey to it, the father went to see them himself. The boys took him for the ghost, killed him, and buried him. The ghost then went home in their father’s likeness and told the family that the two boys had slain the demon. When the boys returned that evening, they all rejoiced together, and for years no one suspected the truth. Later, a ritual master passed by their house and said to the two sons, “There is a powerful evil presence about your honored father.” The sons reported this to their father, who flew into a rage. They went back out and told the master, urging him to leave at once. Instead, the master gave a great shout and entered the house. Their father immediately turned into a huge old wildcat and darted beneath the bed, where it was caught and killed. The man they had killed before had been their true father. They reburied him with the proper rites and put on mourning clothes. One son then killed himself; the other, overcome with anguish and remorse, died as well.
