Ou Ming of Luling traveled with merchants, and whenever his route took him across Lake Pengze, he would cast some of whatever he had aboard into the water, saying, “I offer this as a token of respect.” After several years of this, he was crossing the lake again when he suddenly saw a broad road stretching through the water, dust swirling over it. Several officials came with carriages and horses to meet him. “Lord Qinghong has sent us to invite you,” they said. Before long, they arrived at a mansion, with clerks and guards at its gates. Ming was terrified. One of the officials said, “There is nothing to fear! Lord Qinghong is touched by the offerings you have made over the years and has therefore invited you here. He is sure to offer you lavish gifts. Accept none of them; ask only for ‘Ruyuan.’” When Ming was brought before Lord Qinghong, he duly asked for Ruyuan, and the lord ordered her to go with him. Ruyuan was one of Lord Qinghong’s maidservants. Ming took her home, and thereafter whatever he wished for came to him. Within a few years, he was very rich.
