A flea once leaped onto the foot of a strutting athlete and bit him as she hopped about. In a fit of temper, he readied his fingernails to crush her, but she sprang away with her natural agility and escaped death. With a groan he said, “O Heracles, why do you not help me against such wretched opponents?” The fable shows that we should not immediately call upon the gods over the smallest and most harmless matters, but only in times of greater need and misfortune.
