It is related that Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Tahir once considered buying a slave girl named Mu’nis, a woman of merit, well versed in literature and poetry. He asked her, “What is your name, girl?” She replied, “May God exalt the emir! My name is Mu’nis.” He had already learned her name, so he lowered his head for a moment, then raised it toward her and recited this verse:
“What would you say to one whom sickness has wasted away for love of you, leaving him bewildered?” She replied, “May God exalt the emir!” Then she recited this verse: “When we see a lover afflicted by the malady of longing, we bestow our kindness upon him.” Delighted with her, he bought her for seventy thousand dirhams, and she bore him Ubayd Allah ibn Muhammad, famed for his noble deeds.
