Hanyin Sheng was a young beggar who lived beneath the Wei Bridge in Chang’an. He often begged in the marketplace, where the people grew so weary of him that they splashed him with filth. Before long he was back begging in the market, his clothes as clean as ever. When the chief magistrate heard of this, he had the boy arrested and put in fetters and shackles, yet the boy continued to appear in the marketplace, begging. They seized him again and meant to put him to death, whereupon he vanished. The houses of those who had splashed him with filth collapsed of their own accord, killing more than ten people. A saying then spread through Chang’an: “When you see the beggar boy, give him fine wine, lest your house come tumbling down.”
