When Zhao Gu’s riding horse suddenly died, he was deeply grieved at its loss and consulted Guo Pu. Guo Pu said, “Send several dozen men with bamboo poles thirty li to the east. They will come to a wooded hill; have them beat about among the trees. A creature will emerge, and they must hurry to bring it back.” Zhao Gu did as he was told, and sure enough, the men caught an ape-like creature. They brought it back, and as soon as it came through the gate and saw the dead horse, it bounded over to the horse’s head and breathed in and out through its nostrils. Before long, the horse rose to its feet. It shook itself vigorously and neighed, then ate and drank as usual. The creature, meanwhile, was nowhere to be seen. Zhao Gu marveled at this and rewarded Guo Pu generously.
