The elder sister of Gu Qiu, deputy governor of Yangzhou, fell ill at the age of ten. When she was over fifty, Gu Qiu asked Guo Pu to divine her fortune by the milfoil stalks. He obtained the hexagram Great Exceeding changing to Ascending, and pronounced: “Great Exceeding bears no auspicious sign. Beside the ancestral tombs, a withered willow neither flowers nor flourishes. A wandering soul is stirred, and a dragon-drawn carriage appears. The body is burdened with grievous afflictions, beset by uncanny evil. The cause lies in felling a sacred tree and slaying a spirit serpent. The fault is not hers, but her forebears’. Such is the judgment of the hexagrams—what can be done?” Gu Qiu then investigated his family’s past. An ancestor had once felled a great tree, discovered a large serpent within it, and killed it; the girl had fallen ill soon afterward. After her illness began, several thousand birds gathered to wheel above the house. Everyone thought this strange, but no one knew the reason. A farmer from the county happened to pass by the house and looked up. He saw a dragon drawing a carriage, dazzling in five colors and of extraordinary size. After a little while, it vanished.
