Ge Xuan, whose courtesy name was Xiaoxian, received the Scripture of the Immortals on the Nine Elixirs from Zuo Yuanfang. Once, while dining with a guest, he spoke of magical transformations. The guest said, “When we have finished, Master, would you perform a feat for our amusement?” Ge Xuan replied, “Would you perhaps like to see something now?” He spat out the rice in his mouth, and it all turned into hundreds of large bees, which settled on the guest’s body without stinging him. After a while, Ge Xuan opened his mouth, and the bees all flew into it. He chewed and swallowed them: they were rice again, just as before. He could also point at toads, crawling creatures, swallows, sparrows, and the like and make them dance, keeping time as people do. In winter he served his guests fresh melons and jujubes; in summer he brought them ice and snow. On another occasion, he had someone scatter several dozen coins into a well. Holding a vessel over the well, he called to the coins, and they flew out one by one. When he served wine to guests, no one needed to pass the cups: each cup came before its guest of its own accord, and if any wine remained, the cup would not leave. Once, while sitting with the ruler of Wu in an upper chamber, he saw earthen figures being made for a rain prayer. The emperor said, “The people long for rain. Can it be obtained?” Ge Xuan replied, “Rain is easy enough to obtain!” He wrote a talisman and placed it in the shrine of the soil god. Within moments, heaven and earth grew dark, and torrential rain flooded the ground. The emperor asked, “Are there fish in the water?” Ge Xuan wrote another talisman and cast it into the water. Before long, several hundred large fish appeared, and he had people prepare them.
