An astronomer was in the habit of going out every evening to observe the stars. One night, as he wandered through the outskirts of town with his mind wholly on the heavens, he fell into a well without noticing it. As he lamented and cried out, a passerby heard his groans, came over, and learned what had happened. “My good fellow,” he said, “while you try to see what is in the heavens, can you not see what is on the ground?” This fable may be applied to people who boast of extraordinary abilities yet cannot even manage the ordinary tasks of life.
