During the Taixing era, Hua Long, a man of Wu, kept a swift hound named Diwei, which he always took with him. One day, when Long went to the riverbank to cut reeds, a great snake coiled itself around him. The hound sprang at the snake and bit it until it died. Long lay rigid and unconscious on the ground. The hound paced about him, weeping, then ran back to the boat before returning to the reeds. His companions, puzzled by its behavior, followed it and found Long insensible. They carried him home. The hound would eat nothing on his account, and only began eating again when Long revived. Thereafter, Long loved and cherished it all the more, treating it as one of his own kin.
