In Shu, a great tree within the palace suddenly snapped for no apparent reason. Qiao Zhou was deeply troubled by this, but had no one with whom he could speak of it, so he wrote on a pillar: “The many and the great shall meet at the appointed time. All prepared and handed over—how can there be a restoration?” By this he meant that “Cao” signified greatness: “the many and the great” foretold that all under Heaven would be united. Once everything had been prepared and handed over, how could anyone rise to establish the state anew? After Shu fell, everyone regarded Zhou’s words as having come true.
