Guo Ju was a native of Longlü, though another account places his birthplace in Wen, in Henei. He was one of three brothers and lost his father early in life. When the mourning rites were over, his two younger brothers asked to divide the inheritance. There were twenty million coins, and each younger brother took ten million. Guo Ju alone stayed with their mother in rented lodgings, where he and his wife worked for hire to support her. After a time, his wife bore a son. Guo Ju reflected that raising the child would hinder him from caring for his mother; moreover, whenever the old woman had food, she delighted in sharing it with her grandson, leaving herself less to eat. So he went out into the fields and dug a hole, intending to bury the child. As he dug, he came upon a stone lid, beneath which lay a pot of gold. Inside was an inscription in red: “Guo Ju, filial son, this pot of gold is bestowed upon you for your use.” Thereupon his fame spread throughout the realm.
