One winter, when the snow lay deep, a poor boy had to go out and fetch wood on a sled. When he had gathered it and loaded it up, he was so cold that he did not want to go straight home, but first to light a fire and warm himself a little. So he scraped away the snow, and as he was clearing the ground, he found a little golden key. Now he thought that where there was a key, there must be a lock to fit it, so he dug in the earth and found a little iron chest. “If only the key fits!” he thought. “There must be precious things in the chest.” He looked, but there was no keyhole to be found. At last he discovered one, but it was so small that it could scarcely be seen. He tried the key, and luckily it fitted. Then he gave it a turn, and now we must wait until he has finished unlocking the chest and opened the lid; then we shall find out what wonderful things lay inside.
