Once upon a time, Tomo no Yoshio, who would become Grand Counselor, was a servant to a district magistrate in Sado Province. While living there, Yoshio dreamed that he stood astride Saidaiji and Tōdaiji, with one foot over each temple. He told his wife of the dream, and she interpreted it, saying, “Why, that must mean your legs will be torn apart!” Alarmed, Yoshio thought fearfully, “What a foolish thing I have done, telling her!” He then went to the house of his master, the district magistrate. Now, the magistrate was an exceptionally skilled diviner, and although he had never treated Yoshio in such a manner before, he welcomed him with extraordinary courtesy, brought out a round straw cushion, and invited him to take a seat of honor. Bewildered, Yoshio grew afraid. “Is he coaxing me up there so he can tear my legs apart, just as my wife said?” he wondered. Then the magistrate said, “You have had a dream foretelling an exalted rank. But you have rashly told it to someone unworthy, have you not? Though you will surely rise to high office, trouble will arise, and you will be condemned.” In time, through his connections, Yoshio went up to the capital and rose to become Grand Counselor. Yet he was indeed condemned, just as the magistrate had foretold.
