He said, “Know, O King, that I have heard of a hunter who used to hunt wild beasts in the wilderness. One day he entered a cave in the mountains and found a hollow filled with bees’ honey. He gathered some of the honey in a skin he had with him, slung it over his shoulder, and brought it to the city, accompanied by a hunting dog he cherished dearly. The hunter stopped at an oil merchant’s shop and offered him the honey, which the shopkeeper bought. Then the merchant opened the skin and poured out some honey to inspect it. A drop fell from the skin, and a bird swooped down upon it. Now the oil merchant had a cat, which pounced on the bird. When the hunter’s dog saw this, it sprang upon the cat and killed it. The oil merchant then fell upon the hunter’s dog and killed it, whereupon the hunter fell upon the oil merchant and killed him. The oil merchant belonged to one village and the hunter to another. When their fellow villagers heard what had happened, they took up their weapons and battle gear and rose against one another. The two ranks met, and swords continued to strike among them until a multitude had perished, whose number none but God Most High could know.”
