Abu al-Ayna said: There were two women in our lane: one was in love with a man, the other with a beardless youth. One night they met on the roof of one of their houses, near my own, unaware that I could hear them. The youth’s lover said to the other, “Sister, how can you bear the roughness of a beard against your breast when he kisses you, and his mustache brushing your lips and cheeks?” She replied, “You silly woman! What adorns a tree but its leaves, or a cucumber but its down? Have you ever seen anything uglier than a bald, plucked thing? Don’t you know that a beard is to a man what flowing locks are to a woman? What difference is there between the cheek and the beard? Don’t you know that God—glorified and exalted be He—created an angel in heaven who says, ‘Glory be to Him who adorned men with beards and women with flowing locks’? Had beards not been as beautiful as flowing locks, the two would never have been coupled together. You silly woman, why should I spread myself beneath a youth whose climax comes too soon, whose release outruns my own, and forsake a man who draws me close when he breathes in my scent, takes his time once he enters, returns when he has finished, excels when he thrusts, and comes back for more whenever he is spent?” The youth’s lover took her words to heart and said, “By the Lord of the Kaaba, I am cured of my love for my companion.”
