Zeus instructed Hermes to record people’s misdeeds on potsherds and place them in a chest beside him, so that he could exact the penalty from each offender. But since the potsherds lay jumbled together, some came into Zeus’s hands sooner and others later, whenever he chose to pass judgment.

We should therefore not be surprised if a wicked man commits a wrong long before he suffers for it.
