When Zeus celebrated his wedding, he invited all the animals to a feast. Only the tortoise failed to appear, and, puzzled by her absence, he asked her the next day, “Why were you alone absent from the feast?” She replied, “One’s own dear home is the best home.” Angered by her answer, Zeus condemned her to carry her home about with her wherever she went. So, too, many people would rather live simply in their own homes than luxuriously in the homes of others.
