During the reign of Emperor Ming of the Han, Wang Qiao of Hedong, a gentleman of the Imperial Secretariat, served as magistrate of Ye. Qiao possessed supernatural arts, and on the first day of every month he would travel from his county to the imperial court. The emperor wondered at his frequent visits, for no carriage or mounted escort was ever seen, and secretly ordered the Grand Astrologer to keep watch for him. The astrologer reported that whenever Qiao was about to arrive, a pair of wild ducks would fly in from the southeast. Men were therefore posted in hiding to watch for the ducks, and when they appeared, a net was cast over them. Yet all it caught was a pair of shoes. The emperor had the Imperial Secretariat examine them, and they proved to be shoes bestowed upon its officials in the fourth year of his reign.
