Once there was enmity between wolves and dogs, and a Greek dog was chosen as the dogs’ general. He was slow to go into battle, while the wolves uttered fierce threats. But he said, “Do you know why I delay? It is always wise to take counsel beforehand. You are all of one breed and one color, but our dogs are of many kinds and boast of the places they come from. Nor are they all alike in color: some are black, some reddish, some white, and some gray. How, then, could I lead into battle those who are at odds with one another and have so little in common?”
