In Linfan County there was a family named Liao whose members lived to a great age, generation after generation. Later they moved away, and their descendants began to die untimely deaths. Others took up residence in their old house, and they too enjoyed long lives for several generations. Only then was it understood that the house was responsible, though no one knew why. Suspicion fell on the reddish water in the well. They dug around it and found several dozen hu of cinnabar buried there by people of long ago. The cinnabar had seeped into the well, and drinking its water had given the residents their longevity.
