(Some devote as much effort to frivolous works as others do to important ones.) A Squirrel stood watching A spirited Chestnut Steed, Who, obedient to spur and rein, Was learning how to gallop. Seeing him move 5 So swiftly and in rhythm, She addressed him thus, With scarcely any shyness: “My good sir, Your vigor, 10 Your lightness And deftness Do not amaze me, For just as much I often do, and perhaps more. 15 I am lively, I am active, I scamper, I ramble, I toil, 20 Climb up and down, And never once keep still.” The worthy Colt then Halts his stride, and gravely, In the following words, 25 Gives the Squirrel his reply: “All this going And returning, All this turning And twisting 30 (Tell me, My friend), Does it serve any useful purpose? I exert myself, But not in vain. 35 I know my trade, And in serving My master I strive To show my skill.” 40 So some writers Must be Squirrels too, If on frivolous works they spend All their native fire.
