A merchant once traveled downriver to the capital, passing the Lone Rock Temple on Lake Gongting. There he saw two women, who said to him, “Would you buy us two pairs of silk shoes? We will reward you generously.” When he reached the capital, he bought fine silk shoes and packed them in a box. He also bought himself a writing knife and put it in the same box. On his return, he left the box and some incense in the temple and went away, forgetting to take out his knife. When his boat reached midstream, a carp suddenly leaped aboard. He cut open its belly and found the writing knife inside.
