While His Highness the Regent was staying at the Konoe residence, a loud voice rang out on the south side. Wondering who it could be, he had someone look, and there was Takemasa, wearing a straw rain cape and hat over red robes, with a rope tied around the cape for a sash and another passed over the hat and fastened beneath his chin. Leaning on a staff, he was running about, performing religious austerities. Altogether, his appearance was so outlandish that nothing could compare with it. The Regent came out to the south side and watched from behind the bamboo blinds. So astonished was he by the sight that he gave Takemasa a horse.
