This, too, is a tale of long ago. Shikibu no Taifu Saneshige was unequaled in his devotion to visiting the Kamo shrines. Yet, owing to the scant merit of his former lives, he received no divine favor beyond his allotted measure. Someone once dreamed that the Great Deity lamented, “Here is Saneshige again—here he is again.” Saneshige prayed that he might behold the deity’s original Buddhist form. One night, while keeping vigil at the Lower Shrine, he set out for the Upper Shrine and, near Nakaragi, came upon an imperial procession. The court officials attended it just as they would an ordinary imperial progress. Saneshige concealed himself in a thicket beside the path and watched. Within the phoenix palanquin stood a single scroll of scripture, its lettering in gold. On its outer cover was written, “All who have once uttered ‘Homage to the Buddha’ have already attained the Buddha Way.” At that moment, it is said, he awoke from his dream.
