This, too, happened long ago, during the Tenryaku era. A band of robbers burst into Jōzō’s dwelling in Yasaka. They lit torches and drew their swords, but then, with eyes wide, every one of them stood rooted to the spot, unable to do a thing. Several hours passed, and as dawn began to break, Jōzō addressed the sacred image he worshipped, saying, “Please release them now and let them go.” At that, the robbers fled home empty-handed, or so the story goes.
