Long ago, in the reign of Emperor Horikawa, monks from Nara were summoned to the palace to recite the Great Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, and Myōsen was among them. As the emperor played his flute, changing from one mode to another, Myōsen matched his chanting to each mode without fail. Amazed, the emperor summoned the monk, who knelt in attendance in the courtyard. At the emperor’s command, he came up onto the veranda. “Do you play the flute?” the emperor asked. “A little, Your Majesty,” he replied. “I thought as much,” said the emperor, and handed him his own flute to play. Myōsen played Manzairaku so exquisitely that words could not do it justice. Deeply impressed, the emperor gave him the flute then and there. It is said that this flute has been handed down and is now in the possession of Kōsei, superintendent of the Hachiman Shrine. (Kōsei presented this flute to the reigning emperor in the third year of Kenpō.)
