Toward the end of the Taikang era, a song called “Breaking Willow Branches” became popular in Luoyang, the capital. Its opening verses told of the hardships of war; its closing verses, of capture and beheading. Later, Yang Jun was executed, and the empress dowager died in confinement—thus fulfilling the omen of the song’s willows, or yang.
