In the ninth month during the reign of Emperor Zhao of Han, a yellow rat appeared in Yan, holding its tail in its mouth and dancing within the main gate of the royal palace. The king went to see it, but the rat danced on as before. He ordered an official to offer it wine and dried meat, yet it would not stop. After dancing for a day and a night, it died. At the time, Dan, King of Yan, was plotting rebellion; this was an omen of his impending death. Jing Fang’s Commentary on the Book of Changes says: “When punishment is meted out without examining the circumstances, the portent is a rat dancing at the gate.”
