Once upon a time there was a magician who stood in the midst of a great crowd, performing his wonders. Among his tricks, he had a rooster strut forward, lift a heavy beam, and carry it as though it were light as a feather. Now there was a girl in the crowd who had just found a four-leaf clover, and it had given her the power to see through any illusion. She saw that the beam was nothing but a straw. So she called out, “Look, everyone! Can’t you see? What the rooster is carrying is only a straw, not a beam.” At once the spell vanished, and the people saw what it really was and drove the sorcerer away in shame and disgrace. But, seething with anger, he said, “I shall have my revenge.” Some time later, the girl was to be married. Dressed in all her finery, she was walking with a grand procession across the fields toward the village where the church stood. Suddenly they came to a swollen brook, with neither bridge nor footbridge to cross it. The bride was quick to gather up her skirts and make ready to wade across. Just as she was standing in the water, a man beside her—it was the magician—called out mockingly, “Well! Where are your eyes, that you take this for water?” Then her eyes were opened, and she saw that she was standing with her skirts held up in the middle of a field of blue-flowering flax. Then all the people saw it too, and drove her away with jeers and laughter.
