A man who kept cocks at his house came across a tame partridge for sale, bought it, and brought it home to be raised among them. But the cocks pecked at the partridge and drove him away, and he grew despondent, thinking they despised him because he was of a different breed. A little later, however, he saw the cocks fighting among themselves and refusing to break off until they had struck one another. Then he said to himself, “Well, I shall no longer be distressed when they peck at me, for I see that they do not even spare their own kind.” The fable shows that sensible people bear insults from their neighbors more readily when they see that those neighbors do not spare even their own kin.
