Some fishermen were hauling in a net. Finding it heavy, they rejoiced and danced, thinking they had made a great catch. But when they dragged it onto the shore, they found only a few fish, and the net full of stones and sand. They were bitterly disappointed, distressed less by what had happened than by the contrast with what they had expected. Then an old man among them said, “Come, friends, let us put an end to this. Sorrow, it seems, is joy’s sister; and after so much rejoicing, we were bound to have some grief as well.” So we too, seeing how changeable life is, should not expect to delight forever in the same good fortune, but remember that after a long spell of fair weather, a storm must come.
