After Zhuge Ke of Wu returned from his campaign in Huainan, he was troubled in spirit on the night before he was to attend court and could not sleep at all. Having finished dressing, he hurried out, but his dog caught the hem of his robe in its teeth and tugged at it. “Does the dog not want me to go?” Ke said. He went out, then came back in and sat down. After a little while he rose again, and again the dog seized his robe. Ke ordered his attendants to drive it away. When he entered the court, he was indeed killed. His wife, who was in her chamber, said to her maid, “Why do you smell of blood?” “I do not,” the maid replied. Before long, the smell grew stronger. His wife questioned her again: “Why is there something so strange about your eyes and the way you look at things?” The maid suddenly sprang up, leaping until her head reached the roof beam. Flinging out her arms and gnashing her teeth, she cried, “Lord Zhuge has been killed by Sun Jun!” Thus everyone in the household, high and low, learned of Ke’s death. Soon afterward, the officers and soldiers arrived.
