Yan Qing of Kuaiji was skilled in divination. A fellow townsman, Wei Xu, wished to travel east. It was a year of famine, and robbers were rife, so he asked Qing to divine his prospects. Qing said, “You must take care not to travel east. You are certain to suffer a violent assault, though not at the hands of robbers.” Xu did not believe him. Qing said, “Since you insist on going, you should take measures to ward off the danger. Find a white male dog belonging to a woman living alone outside the western city wall, and tether it at the bow of your boat.” They searched, but found only a piebald dog, not a white one. Qing said, “The piebald one will do. Still, it is a pity its coat is not pure white. A little of the harm will remain, but it will fall only upon your domestic animals. You need worry no further.” Halfway through Xu’s journey, the dog suddenly began to yelp frantically, as though someone were beating it. By the time they went to look, it was dead, having vomited more than a peck of black blood. That evening, several white geese at Xu’s country house died for no apparent reason. Xu and his family remained unharmed.
