During the Han dynasty, Liang Wen, a man of Qi, was devoted to the Way. His household had a shrine, housed in a building of three or four rooms, with a black curtain hung around the spirit’s seat. He often spent time there. After more than ten years, during a sacrifice, a voice suddenly spoke from behind the curtain, calling itself Lord of the High Mountain. It could consume prodigious quantities of food and drink, and its cures proved effective. Wen served it with the utmost reverence. After several more years, he was allowed to enter behind the curtain. One day, when the spirit was drunk, Wen begged to be allowed to behold its face. “Give me your hand!” it told him. Wen reached in and took hold of its chin, which bore a very long beard. He gradually wound the beard around his hand, then gave a sudden tug—and heard a sheep bleat. The others present sprang up in alarm and helped Wen pull it out. It was a sheep belonging to Yuan Gonglu’s household, which had gone missing seven or eight years before, its whereabouts unknown. They killed it, and the haunting ceased.
