An ass and a rooster lived on a farm. A hungry lion caught sight of the ass and was about to go in and feast on him. But just then the rooster crowed, and the lion took fright at the sound—for lions, they say, are afraid of roosters’ cries—and fled. Emboldened by the thought that the lion had been frightened by a mere rooster, the ass went out to chase him away. But once they were far from the farm, the lion turned and devoured him.

So too, some people, seeing their enemies brought low, grow overconfident and unwittingly fall victim to them.
