A man loaded a sacred statue onto a donkey and led it toward the city. As the people they met bowed down before the statue, the donkey imagined they were bowing to him. Puffed up with pride, he began to bray and refused to go any farther. When the driver realized what was happening, he beat the donkey with his club and said, “You blockhead! This is all we needed—to see people bowing down before a donkey!” The fable shows that those who boast of another’s merits make themselves ridiculous to those who know them.
