An ass was being led along by a driver when, after going a short distance down the road, he left the smooth path and headed for a precipice. Just as he was about to plunge over the edge, the driver caught him by the tail and tried to turn him back. But the ass resisted so stubbornly that the driver let him go, saying, “Have your victory, then—for it is a sorry victory you are winning.” This fable is apt for a man bent on having his own way.
