An eagle swooped down from a lofty rock and snatched up a lamb. A jackdaw saw this and, stirred by envy, wished to imitate him. So he hurled himself down with a great whirring of wings and landed on a ram. But his claws became entangled in the fleece, and he flapped his wings, unable to rise, until the shepherd noticed what had happened, ran over, and caught him. After clipping his flight feathers, the shepherd took him home to his children when evening came. When they asked what kind of bird it was, he said, “As far as I know for certain, a jackdaw; but in his own estimation, an eagle.” So it is with those who strive to rival their betters: besides achieving nothing, they bring ridicule upon themselves on top of their misfortunes.
