It is said that an Egyptian king once taught some monkeys to perform the Pyrrhic war dance. The creatures, who are exceptionally quick to mimic human actions, soon mastered it and danced in purple robes and masks. The spectacle enjoyed great success for quite some time, until a mischievous spectator, who had some nuts tucked inside his robe, tossed them into the midst of the dancers. At the sight, the monkeys forgot their dance and became what they truly were—monkeys rather than war dancers. They smashed their masks, tore their robes, and fought one another over the nuts. The ordered ranks of the dance dissolved, and the audience roared with laughter.
