The King of Chu was strolling in his park, where there was a white ape. He ordered skilled archers to shoot it, but though they loosed arrow after arrow, the ape caught them and laughed. The king then summoned Youji. As soon as Youji laid his hand on his bow, the ape clung to a tree and howled. Later, in the time of the Six States, Geng Lei said to the King of Wei, “I can bring down a bird by drawing my bow and releasing the string without an arrow.” The King of Wei asked, “Can archery truly attain such heights?” “It can,” replied Geng Lei. Presently, they heard a wild goose approaching from the east. Geng Lei drew his bow and released the string without an arrow, and the bird fell.
