Wen Xu, courtesy name Gongci, was a native of Qi in Taiyuan. He served as Colonel of the Army’s Guard. While on an inspection tour in Longxi, he was seized by one of Wei Xiao’s generals, who sought to force him to surrender. Enraged, Xu struck and killed a man with his staff of office. The rebels rushed forward to kill him, but Xun Yu stopped them, saying, “He is a man of honor who wishes to die rather than betray his allegiance.” He gave Xu a sword and ordered him to take his own life. Xu accepted the sword, tucked his beard into his mouth, and sighed, “Shall I let my beard be soiled by the earth?” He then fell upon the sword and died. Gengshi, moved by pity, had his body conveyed to the outskirts of Luoyang for burial and a tomb built for him. Xu’s eldest son, Shou, became Marquis of Yinping. One night, Xu appeared to him in a dream and said, “I have been a stranger here too long. I long for home.” Shou at once gave up his office and submitted a memorial requesting permission to retire and take his father’s remains home for burial. The emperor granted his request.
