A man had two daughters, one of whom he married to a gardener and the other to a potter. Some time later, he visited the gardener’s wife and asked how she was and how things were going for them. She told him that they had everything they needed, but prayed to the gods for just one thing: that stormy weather and rain would come to water the vegetables. Not long afterward, he visited the potter’s wife and likewise asked how she was. She told him that they lacked nothing else, but prayed only that the skies would remain clear and the sun shine brightly, so that the pottery could dry. He said to her, “If you want fine weather and your sister wants rain, which of you am I to join in prayer?” So those who attempt conflicting pursuits at the same time can naturally expect to fail in both.
