During the Han dynasty, Shi Xu, courtesy name Weiming, lived in Kaocheng, Chenliu. As a young man, he once fell ill. On the point of death, he told his mother, “After I die, I shall come back to life. When you bury me, set a bamboo staff upright over my grave. If the staff breaks, dig me up.” When he died, she buried him and set up the staff as he had instructed. Seven days later, she went to look, and the staff had indeed broken. She dug him up at once, and he was already alive. He ran to the well and bathed, then recovered completely. Later, he traveled by boat with a neighbor to Xiapi to sell hoes. When they failed to sell them promptly, he said, “I want to go home.” The others did not believe him. “How could you travel a thousand li home and be back in so little time?” they asked. “I shall be back after one night,” he replied. They then wrote a letter and asked him to bring back a reply as proof. He did indeed return after a single night, bringing the reply. Jia He of Jiangxia, the magistrate of Kaocheng, had a sister who was ill and lived in that neighborhood. Anxious for news, he asked Shi Xu to go and see how she was. Though the journey was three thousand li, Shi Xu returned after two nights to report.
