This too is a tale of long ago. When Chikai, who held the priestly rank of Hōin, was still in office, he undertook a hundred-day pilgrimage to Kiyomizu Temple. One night, as he was returning late from the temple, he heard a voice on a bridge reciting the passage, “Only in the Perfect Teaching is opposition itself accord; in the other three teachings, opposition and accord remain distinct.” Thinking how sublime it sounded, and wondering who could be reciting it, he drew near and saw a man afflicted with leprosy, his skin white. Chikai sat down beside him and began discussing the Buddhist teachings, only to find himself all but outargued. “Surely there can be no scholar like this in either Nara or Kyoto,” he thought, and asked where the man lived. “Here on this slope,” the man replied. Chikai went looking for him many times afterward, but never found him again, and the matter ended there. He wondered whether the man might have been some being other than an ordinary mortal.
