Tao Angong was a master smelter of Lu’an who often tended the furnace fires. One morning, the flames burst upward, sending a purple blaze into the sky. Angong prostrated himself beneath the furnace and begged for mercy. A moment later, a Vermilion Bird alighted atop the furnace and said, “Angong! Angong! Your furnace has opened a passage to Heaven. On the seventh day of the seventh month, a red dragon will come to fetch you.” When the appointed day arrived, Angong mounted the dragon and departed toward the southeast. Tens of thousands of people from the city and surrounding towns had prepared farewell offerings to see him off, and all bade him farewell.
